Today The One Club for Creativity, the top nonprofit organization celebrating creative excellence in the advertising and design industries, announced that its board of directors has voted to name FCB global chief creative officer Susan Credle as its first chairwoman.

She replaces The Community co-founder and chief creative officer José Mollá, who was chairman for four years.

In addition to Credle, three industry leaders were also named to the organization’s board for the first time: Burger King global CMO Fernando Machado; 72andSunny executive creative director Keith Cartwright; and R/GA U.S. CCO Chloe Gottlieb. Glenn Cole, founder and CCO of 72andSunny, was also re-elected to the vice chair position.

One Club CEO Kevin Swanepoel said the announcement was part of a standard three-year leadership succession pattern. “José has been a terrific leader and partner,” he said. “We added a year [to his tenure] because there are lots of big things happening, a new space and new programs coming to the front.”

During those four years, the organization merged with the Art Directors Club, expanded its international network and moved to a new headquarters in New York.

“The beauty of it is, we have a diverse board, but this is the first time we have a female chair,” Swanepoel told Adweek. “Keith Cartwright has also joined, which means we have two African American board members [including Jimmy Smith of Amusement Park and Saturday Morning]. We are very sensitive about being diverse and leading the industry.”

Credle assumes the top position just over two years after taking over global creative operations for the FCB network.

"I want The One Club to continue to lift up this business to the place where it deserves to be."

“I joined the advertising industry before portfolio schools existed. The One Club became my university,” said Credle, noting that she and many more top agency executives have long referred to The One Show Book as “the advertising bible.”

The One Club “has continued to do programming around the world that helps young people understand the business [of advertising],” Credle said. “There’s so much in our industry that is provocative, but almost negatively so. I want The One Club to continue to lift up this business to the place where it deserves to be.”

A key part of her new role involves “proving that creativity has an economic value to businesses.

“There are some doubters right now,” she added. “Most conversations focus on data, analytics and media audiences.”

Moving forward, Credle also plans to help spotlight more passion projects from creatives that are not tied to specific accounts, noting that creative excellence has always taken precedence at The One Club. She asked, “Do we just say that work can’t be honored? Or do we think about it as a new grouping that’s important to our industry?”

She also aims to increase the organization’s focus on diversity throughout the industry. “It’s embarrassing to me that I’m the first female president of the board. Again, it’s a reminder that, while we’ve come so far, we still have so far to go,” she said.

In addition to the aforementioned appointments and promotions, The One Club also added the following new members to its International Board of Directors:

  • Pat Baron, CCO, McCann Melbourne
  • Eugene Cheong, CCO, Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific and Singapore
  • Sonal Dabral, group CCO, vice chairman, Ogilvy & Mather India
  • Leong Wai Foong, chairman and CCO, BBDO Greater China
  • Mónica Moro, CCO, McCann Spain
