This Site Lets You Practice Job Interviews With Real Questions From Real Creative Leaders

'The Interview Before the Interview' is the brainchild of 3 former coworkers

In some job interviews, you think you’re smashing it–and then the hiring manager asks a curveball of a question that catches you unaware and knocks you off your stride.

To help prepare job candidates for such a moment—and the range of questions likely to come up regardless—a new tool developed by three creatives offers a sneak peek at real interview questions asked by the world’s leading creative directors.

Copywriters Emma Leamore and Pierce Thomson, along with art director Katyana O’Neill, have created “The Interview Before the Interview” to be a tool that puts creatives in front of top creative leaders, albeit virtually, and offers a glimpse into what it would feel like to be grilled by them in the hot seat.

The tool features questions from 37 creative directors, executive creative directors and chief creative officers from agencies including Droga5, Dentsu, VCCP, Ogilvy, AMV BBDO, M&C Saatchi, adam&eveDDB and more.

The questions are randomized, so you can practice your technique in a mock interview setting.

The Interview Before the Interview

Leomore, who is from the New Forest in southern England, told Adweek that the trio, who met when they were working for Australian ad agency The Monkeys in Sydney, developed the idea after realizing that creatives are often better at selling ideas than at selling themselves.

“We always kept in touch [after leaving The Monkeys] and threw ideas around now and again,” Leomore said. “We got talking about how it would be be cool to have a tool that would help. The coronavirus freed us up to make it happen, and we started reaching out to creative directors. Most people have been so helpful.”

She described the resource as “a place to familiarize yourself with the breadth of questions that are asked–because one minute you might be asked, ‘If you were a door handle, how would you advertise yourself?’ and the next minute you might be asked to talk about your favorite campaign. All the creative directors out there have different styles, as well.”

The site also has a feature that connects prospective employers with people looking for work. Those who click on the site’s “Hire” tab will be shown a CV at random. Leomore said they currently have eight CVs on the site but that they want to build it out to include more.
