Four Vie for N.Y. State Lottery

NEW YORK — Four finalists will compete for the $60 million New York State Lottery account, sources said. They are the incumbent, Grey, which will defend against DDB, Bates and Wolf Group, all New York. Publicis and McCann-Erickson, both New York, did not advance.

Two-hour oral presentations are scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday as client executives visit the offices of each agency finalist, sources said. “It’s a chemistry test,” one source said of the meetings. “Creative, strategic and media presentations have already been made. The meetings will be a reiteration of those.”

DDB, which had produced a memorable and award-winning campaign tagged, “Hey, you never know,” lost the account to Grey in 1998 and is eager to win it back.

Grey’s work for New York State Lottery included the tagline, “Will you be ready if it happens to you?” and focused on consumers’ relatively modest material aspirations such as a vacation abroad or indulging in a hobby.

Grey’s contract with the client officially expires Oct. 1

A final decision date has not been determined. Client representatives could not be reached for comment.
