Intel Partners With Fashion Brand to Craft a Blinged-Out Smartbracelet

Don't call it a smartwatch

There's bling, and then there's upmarket digital bling.

Intel, the company that makes chips that power your laptop, teamed up with fashion brand Opening Ceremony to bring you My Intelligent Communication Accessory, or MICA.

Reuters reports that MICA connects fashionistas with Facebook, Google and Yelp via an AT&T data link, which makes the bracelet vibrate when incoming alerts arrive. The screen rests on the inner wrist for discrete text messaging. It even includes recommendations for nearby restaurants with its GPS functionality.

And if you have to leave in a hurry to get to your next appointment, MICA has intelligent reminders powered by TomTom to let you know when to make your polite exit.

Intel and Open Ceremony hope MICA will appeal to women who want to incorporate their smartbracelet into their wardrobe, rather than wear a rubber wristband with flashing LEDs or a clunky smartwatch.

The $495 price tag includes two years of AT&T data and its own phone number so only intimate friends will be able to get in touch with your wrist. It also eliminates the need to schlep around a smartphone and dig deep into a messy purse.

The bracelet comes in black or white water snakeskin set with lapis, pearls, tiger’s eye or obsidian, depending on the model. The 18k gold-coated bracelet also features a curved sapphire touch screen. The battery on the device lasts two days and can be re-charged via micro USB.

The bracelets go on sale in early December at Open Ceremony and Barney’s department stores.
