5 Romantic Ads for Valentine’s Day That Aren’t Too Sappy

Step aside, Kay Jewelers

Most love-themed commercials at this time of year pour on the treacle so heavily, they're more sickly than sweet. Here are five exceptions—romantic ads that actually won't make you feel ill. Happy Valentine's Day!

  1. David Nygaard Fine Jewelers

Comic-book nerds need love, too—preferably from attractive ladies who know their superhero characters.

  2. Sagami Original

Condom commercials, as a rule, are more lusty than lovely. This one from Japan is an exception.

  3. Budweiser

A classic Budweiser frogs spot from the '90s. Our fat hero's grinning and bouncing at the end deflates romance a bit, but still a great ad.

  4. Shera Flexy Board

Romeo and Juliet retold … as a Thai tragedy for ceiling boards. One of the most-shared ads worldwide over the past five years.

  5. Google

This one is a bit sappy—but it's so masterfully done, you can't resist its charms. Millions fell in love with it on the 2010 Super Bowl.

Bonus spot: Not an ad, but still a lovely production—the Mac-based anniversary stunt that Lowe Roche art director Sean Ohlenkamp put together for his wife last year.
