As the Amazon Appstore turns one, the Kindle Fire appears to be leading growth

In the year it has been available, the Amazon Appstore for Android has grown from 4,000 to 31,000 apps, but statistics from Amazon and Distimo seem to indicate the Kindle Fire has been responsible for most of the store’s growth.

To celebrate the Appstore’s first birthday, Amazon revealed the 10 most popular paid and free apps. Interestingly, three of the top 10 paid apps were unique to the Kindle Fire tablet, which only just came out in November. In February, Distimo reported downloads in the Amazon Appstore increased substantially after the tablet’s launch, peaking in December when total app downloads were 14 times higher than they had been in October.

Amazon also included several quotes from developers with apps in the Appstore in its press release, the most interesting of which was from Adam Flanders, Glu Mobile’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. Flanders revealed his company’s Amazon revenues had increased by more than 1,000 percent since the Kindle Fire launched, which reinforces Distimo’s findings.

Amazon did not reveal the total number of apps downloaded, nor the top grossing apps in the service. The most popular app categories were games, followed by entertainment and productivity.

For the rest of the week Amazon is offering discounts on some of the most popular apps in Appstore. The celebrations start today with EA Popcap’s Plants vs. Zombies, which is on sale for $0.99. Amazon is also giving away eight Kindle Fire tablets as part of the promotion.
