CNN Serves Pink Slips with a Side of Counseling

For those facing layoffs today in CNN’s Washington bureau, staffers say the network is offering on-site counseling services. Those to be affected received a message offering “an experienced counselor” who will be on hand this afternoon to offer confidential services. Twenty-eight positions are expected to be part of layoffs in CNN’s DC bureau.

Yesterday, our sister site TVNewser reported:

“As many as 300, or 8%, of CNN’s workforce is being cut in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York and Los Angeles. About 130 staffers have taken a voluntary buyout, other open positions are not being filled. The remainder, about 170 positions, are the result of layoffs which are happening today and tomorrow.”

Thus far, CNN’s “Sanjay Gupta, MD,” “CNN Money,” and “Unguarded” have been canceled with some staff members excluding hosts being let go. HLN’s “Jane Velez Mitchell” was also canceled, with show staff and host departing.
