Defense News’ John Bennett Joins CQ Roll Call

Bennett will serve as the "CQ budget tracker."

7GoaMpr3John Bennett, most recently a senior congressional reporter for Defense News, will join CQ effective immediately, according to a staff memo from Steve Komarow, vp and news director for CQ Roll Call.

Bennett will succeed Jonathan Miller as CQ budget tracker, reporting to Jane Norman as part of their team that covers appropriations and the budget. While working at Defense News, Bennett launched and oversaw the CongressWatch web channel covering budget issues such as the “fiscal cliff” debate.

Please welcome John Bennett to the CQ News team.  He’s going to take the helm of the CQ Budget Tracker, succeeding Jonathan Miller in that role.

John has covered defense, national security and foreign policy issues in Washington since 2003, with an emphasis on the congressional budget process. Most recently, he was the Senior Congressional Reporter for Defense News, where he launched and oversaw the CongressWatch web channel. He has covered major federal budget issues such as the “fiscal cliff” debate, the “Ryan-Murray” budget agreement, the 2013 government shutdown, and Washington’s pursuit of a “grand bargain” budget deal. His work also has appeared in USA Today, The Hill, and U.S. News & World Report.

John earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Appalachian State University in his native North Carolina, and a Master’s Degree in Global Security Studies from The Johns Hopkins University’s Washington program. He also has studied at Georgetown University.

John will be reporting to Jane Norman as part of the team that covers appropriations and the budget. Jon Miller will return to his beat covering state policy and finances on the team led by Tony Gnoffo.
