Sacramento Bee Sports Editor Fesses Up to F-Bombing Local Radio Station

Last week, Sacramento News & Review blogger Nick Miller posted an item about allegations that Sacramento Bee sports editor Tom Couzens had called into Don Geronimo’s KHTK 1140 AM morning radio show on two separate occasions and gone off on the show screener in F-bomb fashion. Couzens denied the circumstantial evidence, which mainly involved the fact that when Geronimo staff called back the displayed number, it went to Couzens’ voicemail. He was also reported to have told newspaper co-workers his cell phone had been “cloned.”

What a difference a week of local media and public scrutiny makes. Yesterday, Miller shared an email he received from Couzens, in which the sports editor admitted the two angry calls were from him:

For months, KHTK’s Don Geronimo has vowed “to get” me for criticizing the format of his morning radio show, and unfortunately I allowed him to get to me. Two weeks ago, in two anonymous calls to his screener, I made inappropriate comments about the show. I denied doing so when contacted by a Sacramento News & Review reporter. I regret both errors in judgment and apologize to the KHTK screener, readers of the News & Review and my colleagues at The Bee.

The calls in question were made by Couzens on Wednesday February 22 and Friday February 22, and both contained the F-word.
