Emerging top paid iOS apps: Fancy Pants, Procreate and Incoboto

This week saw a lot of well-established apps dominating the iPhone and iPad charts, with relatively few new releases performing strongly. These include Chillingo’s iOS port of popular Flash game Fancy Pants, which performed well on both iPhone and iPad, taking the No. 2 and No. 1 spots in the respective charts. On the iPad, action-adventure Waking Mars from Tiger Style Games and the iPad puzzle adventure Incoboto from one-man development team Fluttermind performed well.

This week’s top paid iPhone apps

Fancy Pants — Released on Mar. 1 and published by Chillingo  Fancy Pants is an iOS port of a popular Flash game that features stylized hand-drawn artwork, traditional “platformer” gameplay and a generous amount of content for players to challenge. The game shoots to No. 2 in the iPhone charts and No. 1 in the iPad charts following a successful outing on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year. The game costs $0.99 and was developed by Borne Games.

[Update] Bejeweled — EA PopCap’s popular $0.99 puzzler Bejeweled jumps back up the charts to the No. 4 spot this week thanks to an update at the end of February adding a new game mode.

The Lorax – Dr Seuss — Oceanhouse Media‘s digital version of Dr. Seuss’ cautionary tale of greed and environmental destruction reached No. 12 in the iPhone charts this week. The app allows children to read the book themselves, hear the story be read to them, or watch the tale unfold automatically. The Lorax is currently on sale for in celebration of the Dr. Seuss’ March 2 birthdate.

The Night Sky — iCandi Apps’ augmented reality stargazing app The Night Sky climbs back up the charts to No. 20 thanks to a 75% off sale and a recent update enabling automatic sky tracking on the compassless 4th-gen iPod touch.

[Update] Ski on Neon — The Tiny Wings-inspired stunt racer Ski on Neon from Esoteric Development closes out our top paid app chart this week with a No. 33 placement since going from free to $0.99. The game received a recent update to rebalance the difficulty of some levels and add additional in-app purchases for further content including character customization. This week’s top paid iPad apps

[Update] Procreate — Professional painting and sketching app Procreate from Savage Interactive hangs on at No. 8 in the iPad charts this week despite having not received any updates since June 2011. Its success is thanks to a limited-time sale offering the app for $0.99 instead of its usual $4.99. Procreate offers realistic painting, HD-size canvases on iPad 2 and support for layered Photoshop files, and has received many positive reviews and is well respected by digital artists.

iBomber Defense Pacific — A tower defense title set in the Pacific Rim, Chillingo’s iBomber Defense Pacific is a brand new entry in a long-running and popular series of games. It’s available now for $2.99 and currently sits at No. 14 in the charts. It was developed by Cobra Mobile.

Penultimate — Handwriting, notetaking and sketching app Penultimate from Cocoa Box Design was recently spotlighted by Apple in its celebrations of the App Store surpassing 25 billion downloads. Reportedly the 4th best-selling iPad app of all time, Penultimate is a digital notebook that features realistic gel ink simulation, collaborative productivity features and full integration with Dropbox and Evernote. It is currently on sale for $0.99 in celebration of its success, which has pushed it to No. 16 on the charts.

Waking Mars — A new release from Tiger Style Games, the $4.99 action adventure Waking Mars is Apple’s iPad Game of the Week and currently enjoys a No. 18 placement on the paid charts.

Incoboto — Puzzle adventure Incoboto from single-man development team Fluttermind closes out our roundup this week with its galaxy-spanning quest to relight the suns extinguished by the mysterious “Corporation.” Described by its creator Dene Carter as a “moody, challenging, adventure-puzzler in the spirit of Portal and Ico,” the game is currently enjoying an introductory price of $2.99 and has climbed to No. 28 in the charts since its launch on March 1.
