Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Facebook users finally have the ability to share their collections with individual people or groups.
In the interest of avoiding confusion, this update applies to the collections feature that enables users to save and organize content they discover on Facebook, and it has nothing to do with the social network’s collection ad format, which enables brands to feature their offerings in a quick-loading post-click experience powered by Facebook’s Instant Experience (formerly Canvas).
Facebook began rolling out its collection feature late last year as a way for people to save and organize content such as posts from friends and pages, ads, Facebook Watch videos and listings from Facebook Marketplace.
The social network said in a Newsroom post that “millions” of people are now using the collection feature every day.
Starting Tuesday, those collections can be shared with friends or groups of friends, and people who are invited can become contributors to those collections, with the ability to add and edit posts.
Facebook said the collection-sharing feature will be available to all users over the next week, and it shared the following examples of how it can be used: “If you create a collection of products—a holiday wish list of sorts—you can share it with a group of hand-selected family members on Facebook to give them ideas of what gifts you’d love to receive for the holidays. If you and a group of friends are planning a holiday party, one of them can create a collection called ‘holiday recipes’ and share with each person helping to plan. Those invited can add holiday recipes they’ve discovered on Facebook and save in the shared collection.”
