Earlier this month, web series favorite The Guild, written by and starring Felicia Day, returned for its sixth season, and this week Day appeared on What’s Trending to talk with Shira Lazar about the series, the experience of building and programming her YouTube network Geek & Sundry, creativity vs. entrepreneurship on the web, and more.
Day talks about the pressure that goes along with creating a majorly successful web series like The Guild, saying, “It never gets easier. It actually gets harder because you always are looking for ways to reinvent the show.” With each season, she says, you have to do something completely different, so people don’t get bored. “I feel like I definitely have to deliver, not only for my own standards…but for our fans.”
The Guild is now a featured show on Day’s new YouTube channel Geek & Sundry, which has been on the air for six months, and for the first time she is not only taking on a creative role, but is taking on an entrepreneurial role as well. In the interview, she talks about what this has been like for her. Programming a YouTube network like Geek & Sundry “is a start up company,” she says. “You’re managing people, you’re doing office space, you’re just doing all these things that I, as a creator, am not used to doing.”
Day says, “I think that the web kind of defines the entrepreneur artist. I mean really, that’s where the opportunity was open—the door was open, if you had that entrepreneurial spirit and if you’re creating something, to get it out to your audience.” That being said, Day understands that it can be difficult to juggle both the artistic and business side of things. “I think now that we’re reaching a point where everything’s so saturated it’s a delicate balance. It gets to a point where it’s so big that you can’t manage all aspects of it, so you kind of have to be an entrepreneur or an artist now.” It seems as though Day has done a great job of finding this balance.
