Glenn Greenwald’s First Look Media to Release Snowden-Themed Digital Mag

First Look Media, the journalism venture led by former Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, has announced that it will launch its first digital magazine next week. The magazine, which will be the first in a series of single-topic online publications from First Look, will focus on Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks. Greenwald, journalist and filmmaker Laura Poitras and The Nation's former national security correspondent, Jeremy Scahill, will oversee editorial operations.

In a memo, Omidyar and First Look editorial advisor Eric Bates (formerly the executive editor of Rolling Stone), said that the magazine is being launched as a reaction to the “dramatic escalation in the threats against journalists reporting on the NSA story.”

“We are launching the new site as a public service, committed to reporting on one of the most pressing issues of our time in a transparent and responsible manner,” they wrote, adding that “the site’s staff has already uncovered a host of new and disturbing revelations in the NSA documents.”

A First Look spokesperson told Mashable that the name of the new magazine will be released next week. The official launch date will be announced shortly on Greenwald and Scahill’s Twitter feeds.

First Look was founded last year following Greenwald’s departure from The Guardian for a then-unnamed venture. In addition to the digital magazines, the company is planning to launch a flagship news site focusing on general interest topics later this year. First Look is also creating a separate technology company to support the news organization’s back end.

While Omidyar has already pledged $250 million to launch First Look, long-term funding plans are unclear. “We’re figuring that out,” Omidyar wrote last week. “We’ll experiment with new and old revenue sources and create entirely ones.”
