For the past several years, Hearst has handed out its annual Tower Awards to the magazines boasting the strongest business performance. This coming spring, the publisher will also start honoring its brands' editorial achievements—in both print and digital—with the introduction of the Hearst Editorial Excellence Awards.
On April 15, awards will be given in a dozen categories, such as Print and Digital Innovation of the Year, Cover of the Year, Special Interest Reporting and Best Use of Social Media, with each magazine permitted up to six submissions. The judging panel, led by Hearst's editorial director Ellen Levine, will include editors in chief, art directors and executive editors from within the company as well as several outside journalists. (To keep things fair, judges won't get to assess their own brands.)
Hearst began handing out the advertising-focused Tower Awards back in 2007. This past year's winners included Good Housekeeping (which, despite finishing the year with ad pages flat, saw a major boost in profit following a much-needed redesign), Town & Country, Elle Décor, HGTV Magazine and Harper's Bazaar.
