Herb Block Foundation to be Honored at DC Vote’s Champions of Democracy Awards Gala

DC Vote will honor the Herb Block Foundation at its 2014 Champions of Democracy Awards Gala on Wednesday, October 15. The foundation, named after the late Washington Post chief editorial cartoonist Herb Block, defends basic American freedoms through educational and charitable programs.

A special exhibit of Block’s work will also be on display at the gala and Clarence Page, a senior member of The Chicago Tribune editorial board, will present the award to the Herb Block Foundation.

“Herb Block was an institution as The Washington Post’s editorial cartoonist for more than 40 years,” said Kimberly Perry, executive director of DC Vote. “The plight of the people of the District of Columbia was a frequent topic of his work. DC Vote is honoring the Herb Block Foundation for keeping the famous cartoonists’ artwork alive and for passing on his passion for a strong American democracy on to new generations.”

We met Perry last spring when we spoke with her on DC Vote’s efforts to secure full voting representation in Congress for the District of Columbia. On progress in those efforts since we last spoke, Perry explained, “This year has seen great strides in our efforts to advance democratic equality for the District of Columbia. We amended the Home Rule Charter to seek local budget control. President Obama included budget and legislative autonomy provisions in his FY2015 budget and spoke out in support of full equality for DC. The U.S. Senate held a hearing on DC equality after statehood legislation garnered a record number of cosponsors in the House and the Senate. And, recently we heard US Attorney General Eric Holder emphatically call for an end to the injustice of taxpaying American citizens in DC being denied equal rights.”

Former US Small Business Association deputy administrator and former president and CEO of Verizon, Washington, DC Marie Johns and Barclays Wealth and Investment Management director Joseph Perta will co-chair the event, with honorary chair Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC).

The gala is set to take place at the Great Hall of the Library of Congress on Oct. 15 from 7 – 9:30. For tickets, click here.
