Instagram: Here’s How to Make Your Account Private

Follow our guide to make your Instagram account private

Did you know that Instagram allows you to make your account private at any time? This will stop new users from being able to follow you until they send requests, which you can approve or deny. Our guide will show you how to make your account private. Please note: When you make your account private, your existing followers won’t be affected.

Note: These screenshots were captured in the Instagram application on iOS.

Step 1: Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

The profile picture logo on Instagram is highlighted.

Step 2: Tap the gear icon near the top-right corner of the screen.

The gear icon is highlighted.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap the toggle next to “Private Account” to make your account private. The toggle will turn blue.

The button to turn on the private account setting is highlighted.

If you ever wish to make your account public, complete Steps 1-3 above (the toggle will start out blue, rather than white), and tap “Ok” on the confirmation window that appears to confirm your privacy change.

The "OK" button for changing privacy settings is highlighted.
