Jobless Claims Remain High After Verizon Strike Ends

It’s now been two weeks since the striking Verizon workers returned to their jobs and unemployment claims have not fallen one whit; the Department of Labor reported 414,000 new claims for the week ended Sept. 3, up 2,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 412,000.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted a drop to 405,000.

As of the week ended Aug. 20, the most recent week data were available, 7.2 million Americans were receiving some form of unemployment benefits. That includes 3.5 million receiving regular checks and 3.1 million who had exhausted their regular state benefits and were receiving emergency compensation.
