From the McDonald’s Drive-Thru Window to KBIG 104.3

Careers in radio are a lot like those of stand-up comedy professionals. On-air talent and station management folks will, when given the chance, typically reveal a crazy ping-pong progression across this great airwaves nation of ours.

But few can point to the contextual starting point of a McDonald’s drive-thru window. In an interview given a few years ago to, Brandon Bell—the newly announced associate program director/music director (APD/MD) for Clear Channel’s KBIG 104.3 FM–recalled this unlikely spark:

“Oddly enough, [the defining moment for me] was while I was working the drive-thru at a local McDonald’s. A friend of mine drove through and said I had a good voice. He said that magic line we’ve all heard, “You should be in radio.” And the rest is history. He helped me get my first job in radio playing legal IDs for Rockies [91.1 Lincoln, Nebraska] radio broadcasts.

Bell, after ten years spent with stations in Nebraska and Las Vegas, will also oversee social media and online branding for 104.3 MYfm. He is an avid competitive dart player and maintains a fun personal blog called BellBoy Audio. Welcome to LA.
