Keeping it Simple: Negotiating Tactics for Recent Grads

This piece in The New York Post caught our attention.

Here’s why: A college grad with NBC and BWR internships under his or her belt has a B.S. in marketing and an M.A. in mass media communications.

Their thesis won national honors and yet a job offer specified $35,000 as the starting salary.

The reader asked about a fair way to negotiate the salary. Greg Giangrande, chief HR officer at Time, Inc. pointed out, “What’s fair is what the market will bear. There are plenty of people with lots of letters after their names with honors and experience who can’t even find a job.”

So, although a resume and impressive pedigree may seem to warrant a higher salary, as a recent college grad, keep in mind there’s no harm in trying to negotiate.

His advice? “Point out your experience and education and ask them if there is any flexibility on the salary. Do so professionally and thoughtfully so as not to put the offer in jeopardy.”
