ISIS Releases Fourth Video of Journalist John Cantlie, ‘Eagerly Awaits’ Ground War (HuffPost)
Islamic State militants have released a new video featuring British freelance journalist John Cantlie — the fourth since Cantlie was taken hostage nearly two years ago. The Guardian Cantlie, who has been held for almost two years, said ISIS was “dug in for the fight” in a seven-minute video that emerged on Sunday. Appearing to offer a scripted argument, he said the western public is being rushed into a war it cannot win, against thousands of armed militants. The Independent Cantlie also appeared in an online article calling for the British government to “open a channel and negotiate” with ISIS. It appeared hours after the British Ministry of Defence confirmed that a “specialist” team of British soldiers would head to northern Iraq to help train Kurdish forces fighting the Islamic militant group. The article was published in the ISIS online magazine Dabiq. WSJ The U.K. government said Monday that it was analyzing the article purportedly by Cantlie in which he says he awaits his turn to be executed by the extremist group unless British and American governments negotiate. The writer who identifies himself as Cantlie criticizes the West for not negotiating with ISIS when others have. “For now, I am still alive, but at some point in the near future, the mujahedeen will surely run out of patience. Just ask our government to talk. That’s all,” the article in question read. New York Daily News The British war photographer was captured in Syria along with James Foley in November 2012. Foley, an American war correspondent, was beheaded in August. The following month ISIS released a video of Cantlie criticizing American and British foreign policy, saying he’d been “abandoned” by his government.

Jill Abramson Recalls ‘Stern’ Meeting With Condi Rice to Pull James Risen Piece for NYT (FishbowlDC)
Former executive editor of The New York Times Jill Abramson sat down with Lesley Stahl for 60 Minutes Overtime to discuss a 2003 conversation with then national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, who asked her to stop a piece from being published and prevent further coverage of the CIA’s efforts to thwart Iranian nuclear initiatives by the paper’s then national security reporter James Risen. Mediaite As she recounted to Stahl, Rice was rather awkward about the entire thing, asking her to personally visit her in an undisclosed location. Abramson recalled, “She basically read in a very stern manner from her notes on this legal pad, which were just point after point about why this story would be damaging to the national security. I don’t think I uttered much more than ‘hello,’ and ‘I will think of what you said.’” Rice’s bottom line “was to make sure that Jim ceases all reporting on this story, which was really an extraordinary request.” Politico / Josh Gerstein Risen elected to put the story in a book he wrote, State of War, which was published in 2006, several years after the NYT elected not to detail the saga in which the CIA was said to have botched an operation to provide flawed nuclear blueprints to Tehran through an intermediary. “I regret it now, but I think that I leaned towards not publishing,” Abramson said. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Abramson’s statements could help Risen’s argument that the information was newsworthy and that he therefore had some grounds to defy calls to identify his sources. In the same 60 Minutes segment, former national security agency director Michael Hayden said that he’s “conflicted” over whether the government should prosecute Risen for not revealing his sources.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman ‘Deeply Sorry,’ Maintains She Poses ‘No Risk to The Public’ (TVNewser)
On NBC Nightly News Monday, Brian Williams read a statement from NBC News chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman who was spotted out and about near her Hopewell, N.J. home Thursday despite being under voluntary quarantine due to possible exposure to Ebola. When the state of New Jersey Health Dept. found out, it required Snyderman and her crew be placed in a mandatory quarantine. Deadline Hollywood “We remain healthy and our temperatures are normal,” Snyderman continued in her statement, explaining that “as a health professional I know that we have no symptoms and pose no risk to the public,” but not explaining what prompted her to violate the voluntary quarantine agreement with health officials to make a take-out food run. She did, however, say she is “deeply sorry for the concerns this episode caused.” FishbowlDC Ashoka Mukpo, the NBC News freelance cameraman who worked with Snyderman, has been receiving treatment for Ebola in Omaha, Neb. He tweeted that he’s “feeling like I’m on the road to good health” Monday afternoon. HuffPost Mukpo said he is preparing to put out some new material soon on the conditions in West Africa. Mukpo’s tweets on Monday give hope that he will not meet the same fate as Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who died in Dallas last week while being treated for the disease.

The Walking Dead Sets Another Ratings Record (THR / The Live Feed)
TV’s highest-rated series is still cheating gravity. After four seasons of setting new ratings records every few episodes, The Walking Dead rose yet again on Sunday night — fetching an average 17.3 million viewers and 11 million adults 18-49. Variety Sunday’s premiere bested the show’s previous high — 16.11 million for its fourth-season premiere a year ago — by more than 1 million. It also crushed the show’s record in adults 18-49, with Sunday’s 8.7 rating easily topping the 8.2 it had earned with both its premiere and mid-season return last season. Walking Dead easily bested NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles (roughly 6.7), which was a lopsided affair. Adweek The series was already the biggest show on TV; now it’s the biggest show on TV in a walk, with declines for Duck Dynasty. FX is also doing very well with American Horror Story, and of course HBO’s various projects, but the latter aren’t ad-supported.

Farewell to CNN’s Political Ticker (CNN / Political Ticker)
The Political Ticker blog died of old age on Oct. 13, 2014, after eight years of faithful service to CNN’s readers. FishbowlDC The Ticker’s folding is a strategic move on behalf of CNN Politics Digital’s efforts to “reimagine” its political news coverage. Last month’s CNN Politics Digital hires include WaPo’s Jeff Simon as a video producer; Mashable’s Ashley Codianni as a senior producer and digital correspondent, Politico’s Eric Bradner as a reporter, Steven Sloan as assistant managing editor for enterprise reporting, and Jedd Rosche as breaking news editor. Capital New York On Wednesday, CNN Politics Digital’s website will be redesigned — and the redesign will not include the blog. The site will be given an even more substantial makeover next year. CNN Politics Digital eliminated a number of positions related to the Ticker in August, as part of a broader shift away from text-based content toward social and mobile-optimized video content.

Changes Coming to MSNBC (TVNewser)
When the third quarter ratings came out — during which MSNBC had its lowest quarter in seven years — TVNewser dug deep into the numbers. What we found is there is a correlation between the president’s popularity and that of MSNBC. So what’s the plan for the NBCU news channel? Expect programming changes, less reliance on a recognizable pool of contributors and an approach that goes beyond “The Place for Politics.” Mediaite A well-placed source said MSNBC will be announcing major programming changes sometime in the next month, including the cancellation of Ronan Farrow‘s afternoon program, Ronan Farrow Daily. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media It would not be a particularly surprising move considering Farrow’s show averages 50,000 in the key 25-54 demo, one of the lowest among MSNBC’s lineup. Farrow’s show has been on air for less than a year and faced reports of cancellation almost immediately after it premiered.

Fusion Pacts With Maker Studios for YouTube Programming (THR)
Fusion has signed a deal with Disney’s Maker Studios to air a television special using content from the YouTube multichannel network. The cable network announced Monday that it will air a Best of 2014 unscripted special with clips starring Maker’s network of YouTube stars. A YouTuber will host the Maker programming block. Variety Maker also announced a larger pact with Fusion — the youth-skewing news joint venture between Disney’s ABC News and Univision Communications — under which the MCN is to produce a branded block of programming for Fusion’s TV platform. In addition, Maker will expand the reach of Fusion’s online video content, working to optimize Fusion’s YouTube channel.

NBC News’ Peacock Productions Is Expanding (TVNewser)
NBC News’s Peacock Productions is expanding its Los Angeles office where Melody Shafir, late of BBC Worldwide, joins as VP overseeing all U.S. development. Sharon Scott continues as president and GM of Peacock Productions based in New York. Deadline Hollywood In this newly created position, Shafir will oversee all of Peacock Productions’ U.S. development, including L.A., New York and Miami. Shafir will be responsible for all original programming, series and format development and will report to Benjamin Ringe, SVP development and executive producer. Shafir previously served as an executive producer at BBC Worldwide Productions.

Bill O’Reilly: When I Go on Letterman or Morning Shows, ‘Ratings Go Up’ (TVNewser)
Bill O’Reilly continued his media tour for his latest historical thriller Killing Patton, appearing on his own network talking about one of his favorite subjects: the media. HuffPost “At first [mainstream media] tried to destroy me,” he told host Howard Kurtz of MediaBuzz. “They couldn’t. They failed.” He told Kurtz that the reason so many other network shows invite him on is because he always brings “success.” “I bring ratings to those shows,” he continued. “When I go on Letterman or I go on the morning shows, their ratings go up. That’s why they have me on.”

The New York Times surprised chess aficionados on Sunday by appending a note to its long-running chess column: “This is the final chess column to run in The New York Times.” It appears that the note may have been a bit premature, however: The column’s print run is ending, but its online future is still an open question.

Aereo Asks FCC for Lifeline by Defining It as Pay TV Service (Deadline Hollywood)
The broadcast streaming service Aereo is in limbo after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that it can’t retransmit TV stations’ free, over-the-air signals without their permission. CEO Chet Kanojia argued in a visit with FCC chairman Tom Wheeler and other senior officials on Friday, and in a blog post Monday, that regulators should define it as a pay TV service.

Netflix Pacts With Showtime, CBS Studios Intl. to Feed New European Markets (Variety)
Rolling off its launch across six European markets and the Netherlands, Netflix has inked a multi-territory licensing deal with CBS Studios International and Showtime. The deal, which covers the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg, will provide Netflix with exclusive first-window rights to the Showtime skein Penny Dreadful in those markets.

BSkyB Backs Online Video Startup Pluto.TV (THR)
BSkyB continues to boost its investment portfolio. The U.K. pay TV giant has invested $500,000 into online video startup Pluto.TV, the companies announced Monday. The partnership with Pluto.TV — which programs online content into TV-like channels that can be watched at any time — builds on Sky’s effort to invest in U.S. startups.
