Mother’s Day Was the Hottest Hot Topic on Facebook and Instagram in May

Memorial Day and Cinco de Mayo also drove conversation

Mother’s Day dominated conversation on Facebook and Instagram in May, according to Facebook IQ.

The social network’s research arm shared its Hot Topics for the month, and Memorial Day and Cinco de Mayo were strong performers across both platforms in the holidays and events category, while the Met Gala also made its mark among Instagrammers.

Prince Harry dominated the people category across both Facebook and Instagram.

In the sports category, the Kentucky Derby and Stephen Curry and the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball League heated up Facebook, while Instagram users discussed the eventual champion Raptors and Kawhi Leonard.

Facebook users chatted up The Big Bang Theory, Batman and Elton John in the entertainment category in May, while Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga captured Instagrammers’ fancies.

Whirlpool and Coppertone topped the brands and products category on Facebook last month, while Instagrammers were thirsty for McCafé from McDonald’s.

Finally, in the food and drink category for May, Facebookers chowed down on Vietnamese food, while Instagram users continued to opt for caffeine in the form of Starbucks’ Frappuccino.

Facebook IQ measured subjects that drove disproportionately high volumes of discussion on both social platforms, marking the latest in a Facebook-Adweek Hot Topics monthly series that began in 2015.
