Why just video chat in Facebook Messenger, when you can video chat on Facebook Messenger while playing augmented reality games with up to six people?

Messenger product manager Nora Micheva announced in a Newsroom post that starting Wednesday, Messenger users can challenge their friends to one of two games:

  • Don’t Smile, in which players have to hold a serious face the longest.
  • Asteroids Attack, to determine which players are better at navigating their spaceships.

Micheva said more games will be added in the coming weeks, including Beach Bump, in which players pass a beach ball back and forth, and Kitten Kraze, a matching cat game.

She added that users with the latest version of Messenger can access the new AR games by opening existing conversations or choosing people or groups of people they want to video chat with, and then tapping the video icon in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.

Tapping on the star button will enable them to select one of the AR games, and the person or people in the group will receive notifications that the game is on.

There were more than 17 billion video chats on Messenger in 2017, double the total of the previous year, Micheva wrote.
