New Pirates of the Caribbean Mobile Game Launches Ahead of Fifth Film

The game should benefit from the excitement surrounding Disney's latest film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales

South Korean game developer and publisher Joycity launched Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War on iOS and Android. The free-to-play naval warfare game is inspired by Disney‘s popular Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, and it features characters, ships and storylines based on the films.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War allows players to become pirates and build ships, train troops and battle other players, as well as the monsters living in the game’s waters. Given the game’s connection to Disney’s film franchise, it should benefit from the excitement surrounding Disney’s fifth film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which hits U.S. theaters May 26.

We’ve seen such a positive correlation in the past, associated with another Disney property: Star Wars. Specifically, the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens drove downloads and revenue to Star Wars-themed mobile apps and games. It’s possible the same could happen here, as fans of the Pirates films may wish to engage with the series in a new way before and/or after seeing the new installment. For the record, a Disney spokesperson told Social Pro Daily that Disney does not currently have plans to release its own game based on the new film.

In a press release, Hanseo Jo, chief operating officer of Joycity, commented on the game:

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most popular movie franchises in history, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War will immerse fans directly into the action like never before. With the fifth installment of the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, coming out soon, this new game will allow players to engage further with the world of Captain Jack Sparrow and the other iconic characters in new ways.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The game offers optional in-app purchases.
