The success of LinkedIn’s Open Candidates feature after a little more than one year proves that discretion is the better part of valor.
The professional network introduced Open Candidates in October 2016, with vice president of talent solutions and careers Dan Shapero saying in a blog post last October that the feature was a way for users to “privately” alert recruiters of their interest in new job opportunities, writing, “To enable the feature, simply turn sharing ‘on’ and fill in some brief information about the types of roles you are interested in. Who among us hasn’t, at some point, tried to find work without our boss finding out? Now, you can privately indicate to recruiters on LinkedIn without worrying. We will hide the Open Candidates signal from recruiters at your company or affiliated company recruiters.”
Group product manager Vidya Chandra announced in a blog post Wednesday that 10 million LinkedIn users are “currently open to new opportunities” via Open Candidates.
She also described LinkedIn’s efforts to make the feature easier to use, writing, “On your profile, you can now let recruiters know you’re open in the Career Interests section within Your Dashboard (remember, only you can see this section, and we never display that you’re an Open Candidate on your public profile!). Once you navigate to Career Interests, we’re now helping you get contacted for opportunities that fit exactly what you’re looking for. We ask you what specific job titles you’re open to, what cities you’d want to work in and how soon you’re looking for your next opportunity. Tell us what your dream job is and we’ll make sure recruiters know about it.”
Finally, Chandra said new Open Candidates features “coming soon” include personalized suggestions to help users improve their LinkedIn profiles, as well as “unique insights” on how much attention users on the professional network are getting from recruiters.
