Lu Wei, China’s top Internet regulator, may not welcome Facebook to his house, but he’s certainly welcome at Facebook. Lu, the minister of China’s Cyberspace Administration, recently toured the campuses of U.S. tech giants Facebook, Apple and Amazon, according to a report and pictures posted on a Chinese government website. Bloomberg Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg greeted Lu in Mandarin, and Lu found a copy of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s book “The Governance of China” on the billionaire’s desk. While the world’s largest social network has been blocked by China’s censors since 2009, the company is seeking to build up its business selling ads to companies through a Hong Kong office and is said to have leased space in Beijing this year. Quartz While trying to understand modern China is a commendable task for an employee of Facebook or any other social media giant, it is unclear how much real insight Xi’s book might provide. The book is a compilation of Xi’s “major works from November 15, 2012 to June 13, 2014,” according to a state-run website, including “79 speeches, talks, interviews, instructions and correspondence in 18 chapters.” PC World Lu has been leading the country’s efforts to regulate its Internet, at a time when the government’s online censorship has only grown more pervasive. Facebook has long been among the U.S. websites blocked, but in September the country also began cutting access to the Instagram app, also owned by Facebook.

U.K. Leaders Take Aim at Facebook’s Tax Bill (AllFacebook)
The chair of the U.K. Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Margaret Hodge, had some harsh words for Facebook over its low tax bill and its method of legally avoiding taxation by channeling its revenues through Ireland, home of its European headquarters. The Guardian reported that Facebook reported nearly $3.69 billion in advertising sales in Europe, yet it paid just $2.83 million in tax, adding that the company channeled $3.56 billion of its global revenues through Ireland, as well as paying out another $3.56 billion in “administrative expenses,” most of which were royalty payments to the parent company.
