Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg surprised the audience at Tsinghua University in Beijing when he answered questions in Mandarin. Clearly if you want to connect on a global stage, you need to know more than just a few pleasantries. IBT On Monday, Zuckerberg was appointed to the board of the University School of Economics and Management. “We discussed connecting the world,, innovation and the early days of Facebook,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. Mediaite Learning Mandarin makes complete business sense for Zuckerberg: Facebook has been banned in China since 2009, for its “ability to spread rumors,” according to Chinese officials. In order to crack the Chinese market and reach hundreds of millions of tech-savvy users, Zuckerberg has hired hundreds of Chinese students, established partnerships with Chinese commerce groups and joined Tsinghua’s board, which Bloomberg describes as a “meeting ground of sorts for Western corporate higher-ups and Chinese officials.” Wired Zuckerberg’s proficiency would appear to be the positive result of one of his annual self-improvement challenges. Every year, Zuckerberg picks a skill or a goal to pursue with extreme focus. This year, the plan was to write one thoughtful thank-you note every day. In 2010, his aim was to learn Mandarin.
