The article “Real Life: Man With a Gun” in April’s Glamour magazine tells the first-person account of a woman faced with a burglar one night in her Brooklyn apartment. The author, Brandon Holley, is one of Condé Nast’s biggest names—but one that’s usually attached to a different masthead.

Holley, the editor in chief of Lucky magazine, first told her story to Cindi Leive, her counterpart at Glamour, while the two were en route to an Oscar de la Renta show. Holley had just seen a bracelet similar to one that had been stolen by the burglar.

“Cindi, ever the editor, immediately asked, ‘Would you write that for Glamour?’” Holley said via email from Paris, where she and Leive were attending the Paris fashion shows. “I hadn't wanted to share it publicly, but Glamour is the perfect place for something personal like that, and I knew her team would handle it the right way. It's an incredibly empowering magazine.”

Though magazines—especially at the competitive Condé Nast—don't usually publish articles by rival editors, Leive thought it was important to have someone of Holley's stature share her experience. “It certainly does send the signal that these things can—and do—happen to anyone,” Leive emailed. “And I think there’s something very humble and relatable about hearing a woman with an extremely glamorous job admit that she went through something difficult and came out OK.”

Holley was initially hesitant to talk about the break-in but knew her story could help readers. “I wanted to tell women that facing my biggest fear (my family being threatened) didn't make me panic, that I could still function even though I was terrified,” she said. “Plus, I hope it acts as a reminder to always take simple steps to protect your family.”

Glamour’s April issue, featuring The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence on the cover, follows the debut of the magazine’s redesign last month. According to Condé Nast, newsstand sales of the March issue are tracking up 9 percent.
