The New York Times Expands Its London Team

The announcement comes after a record-setting year for the Times

In a move to further expand its international presence, The New York Times is growing its breaking news team in London.

The announcement comes on the heels of an excellent quarter for the Times, which broke records last year in terms of digital subscribers when it reached a total of 5.3 million print and digital subscribers. Total revenues increased to $508.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, partly because of a 4.5% increase in subscription revenue from the last quarter in 2018 to the same time in 2019.

The New York Times made significant investments after committing in 2016 to put more than $50 million into its international reporting efforts over three years with larger bureaus in places like Canada and Australia.

Erin McCann, formerly of The Guardian, will lead the London team along with Chris Stanford, a senior staff editor, who has overseen the Morning Briefing newsletter from London.

Joining the team are Daniel Victor, a founding editor and reporter on the Express desk; Derrick Bryson Taylor, of the New York Express desk; and Jenny Gross, who most recently was at The Wall Street Journal in London.

Other U.S.-based publications, like The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, have invested in breaking news desks to handle news as it happens.

“The competition for breaking news has never been greater, especially for live coverage,” said Patrick LaForge, editor, Breaking News Hub, in a statement. “We hope to meet that growing demand for all kinds of news at all hours while adding more Express-style coverage to the global report.”
