Team Edward or Team Jacob? The Twilight film series may be a wrap, but studio Lionsgate and creator Stephenie Meyer announced that five short films based on Twilight characters, helmed by aspiring female directors, will debut next year, exclusively on Facebook, The New York Times reported.
“The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of ‘The Twilight Saga’” will debut on The Twilight Saga Facebook page, with the Times reporting that a group of female panelists will choose the five winners: Meyer; actresses Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and Julie Bowen; Catherine Hardwicke, director of the first film in the series; producer Cathy Schulman; and Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee.
According to the Times, the actors and actresses who portrayed Twilight cast members are not expected to appear in the short films
Facebook vice president of partnerships Dan Rose said in a statement to the Times that Lionsgate’s “premium video program” was a “great opportunity” to engage the more than 150 million users of the social network who follow official Twilight pages.
Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said in an interview with the Times:
We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of Twilight to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans.
This is the just the beginning — a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next. We love Stephenie Meyer.
