Twitter Acquires Social Media Analytics Company BackType

Twitter has just purchased the social media analytics company BackType, bringing on both the technology and members of the team. The financials of the deal were undisclosed.

Announced in a tweet from Twitter PR Tuesday afternoon, it looks like the BackType team will join Twitter’s platform team and work on technology for publishers.

BackType is a tool for online content creators, brands and marketers to measure the impact of their social media strategy. As part of the terms of the Twitter acquisition, BackType will no longer accept new applicants and it will eventually discontinue the Backtype product and API services.

the BackType blog says that the team will be moving to Twitter’s offices in San Francisco, so it looks like they’ll be working pretty closely with the Twitter platform team in coming up with new products for developers.

The BackType blog specifically names Storm as one of the technologies they’ll be bringing over to Twitter in addition to talent. This realtime processing system is no doubt attractive to Twitter, as it will enable them to more effectively harness the millions upon millions of tweets that travel through the network each day. BackType launched out of Y Combinator in 2008 and has raised $1.3 million in venture capital funding since.
