Twitter hasn’t had the best of years but there’s one country where it has performed notably well, and that’s Brazil.
Twitter’s user base grew 25.6 percent in Brazil in 2014, which was the best growth rate in the country since 2010.
At the end of 2013 Brazil had an estimated 4.3 percent of Twitter’s user base. At the time this totalled 241 million active users, meaning Brazil’s share was about 10.3 million.
The expansion this year means Brazil now has approximately 13 million active Twitter users.
72 percent of Twitter users in Brazil used mobile phones or tablets to access the platform, up from 62 percent in 2013.
This summer’s World Cup was cited as one of the main reasons for the boost, with Germany’s 7-1 semi final victory over Brazil becoming the most discussed sports event ever on Twitter.
Twitter has 63 staff in its Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo offices, and has plans to increase this by 70 percent in 2015.
