Verified Pages (All Pages Soon) Can Schedule Facebook Live Videos via API

Verified pages on Facebook will be able to schedule Facebook Live videos, complete with pre-broadcast lobbies, via the Facebook Live API.

Verified pages on Facebook will be able to schedule Facebook Live videos, complete with pre-broadcast lobbies, via the Facebook Live API (application-programming interface).

Product manager Peter Roybal and software engineer Brian Lin announced the new feature in a Facebook Media blog post, noting that starting Thursday, verified pages will be able to schedule Facebook Live broadcasts up to one week in advance, and that once those broadcasts are scheduled, announcement posts will go to News Feed, where users can opt to receive one-time reminder notifications shortly before the start of the broadcasts.

The feature will be made available to all pages “in the weeks to come,” they wrote.

Publishers can open pre-broadcast lobbies up to three minutes before start time, allowing users to ensure that they are on time and interact with other users, and links to scheduled Facebook Live broadcasts can be shared or embedded.

Roybal and Lin said publishers using third-party tools for Facebook Live will be covered “soon,” as scheduling features will be made available to developers.

They also shared the following instructions for page administrators using the Facebook Live API:

  • Navigate to Publishing Tools. Once you’re in Publishing Tools, select “Video Library” and then “Live.”

  • Copy your stream credentials (e.g. stream key, server URL). If you need to find the credentials closer to the time you’re going live, they are also available by editing the post in Video Library.

  • Craft your announcement post. Be sure to write an engaging and informative description so your followers know what to expect from your broadcast. You will be able to update the description later if you want to.

  • Finalize your scheduled live broadcast. Put any finishing touches on your post (such as adding a custom image) before you schedule your broadcast.
