Motherboard, a tech site from Vice, has joined the growing stable of sites that have ended their comment sections. In a twist, Motherboard is asking readers to send letters to the editor.
In a post, Motherboard editor in chief Derek Mead wrote that staffers had debated ending comments for more than a year. The decision to turn to letters to the editor was seen as a way to improve comments and the site at the same time.
“Everyone at Motherboard highly values solid discussion of our reporting and opinions, because it’s a crucial way we get better,” wrote Mead. “We’re still human and praise always feels great, but criticism is necessary for the strength of our publication. So instead of burying discussion in a comments section, we want to publish the best for all to see.”
