Voice-Enabled Gas Pumps Are Coming to Exxon and Mobil Stations

You'll be able to ask Amazon Alexa to 'pay for gas' later this year

Amazon’s digital assistant won’t pump gas for you, but thanks to a collaboration between ExxonMobil and fintech company Fiserv, Alexa will soon help you pay for gas without pulling out a credit or a debit card.

The technology, which will be on display at CES 2020 this week, will be available “later this year” at over 11,500 Exxon and Mobil stations in the U.S. for customers with Alexa-enabled vehicles, the Echo Auto add-on in their cars or “other Alexa-enabled mobility devices.”

According to a press release, after customers pull up to a pump and say, “Alexa, pay for gas,” she will confirm the station location and the pump number. Fiserv will activate the pump and “help ensure a secure payment experience.”

Payments will be processed through Amazon Pay, the Amazon service that allows customers to use the payment details stored in their Amazon accounts.


“We’re excited to bring new technology and better experiences to the gas station,” said Eric Carmichael, fuels marketing manager for the Americas at ExxonMobil, in a statement. “We build and seek out technology that will wow our consumers, providing both ease of use and security.”

Devin McGranahan, senior group president of global business solutions at Fiserv, added, “As consumer expectations change, there is growing demand for frictionless interactions that span the digital and physical worlds.”

This follows Alexa advancements last year like making campaign donations, applying for jobs at McDonald’s and using the voice of actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Meanwhile, ExxonMobil says it is the “first fuel provider to offer voice-activated purchase,” following earlier payment innovations like a pay-at-the-pump service in the 1980s and radio frequency identification (RFID)-enabled touchless payment in the 1990s.
