Why should websites add a like box, along with like buttons, and what’s the difference between the two?
The plugin known as a like box lets websites accumulate fans for Facebook pages in a manner that’s more efficient than a like button.
When a user clicks on webpage’s like box, the Facebook page corresponding to the website joins the user’s list of liked things and a story to that effect publishes to friends’ news feeds.
That individual who clicked the like box also effectively becomes a subscriber to the Facebook page corresponding to the website.
Websites can embed the standard like button to let users share a particular webpage or piece of content, and can send news feed updates to those who’ve clicked.
However, the publishing process is complicated and it essentially requires marketers to manage another page.
The like box is a more valuable addition to websites than the like button because it lets sites conveniently retain a connection with their visitors through a Facebook page.
Adding standard sharing like buttons to your site has value too, as clicks produce news feed stories recommending your site, and the button registers your site in Facebook’s internal search bar.
For this reason, most websites should display both a like box for their Facebook page, plus a like button for each page of their website.
