YouTube Red Introduces Ad-Free Subscription Membership

The YouTube Red service will allow users to pay one monthly price to remove ads across the entire YouTube platform.

Ending months of suspense, YouTube has announced YouTube Red, a paid subscription option for the video sharing platform. YouTube Red will allow users to pay to remove ads across the entire YouTube platform.

Beginning on Oct. 28, YouTube users in the U.S. can try YouTube Red free for one month. After the trial, the ad-free service costs $9.99 per month. Once subscribed, this membership will carry across all platforms where YouTube is available, and will be accessed by signing into one’s account. In addition, YouTube viewers on smartphones and tablets will receive the ability to save videos to watch them offline, and play videos in the background even after switching apps or turning off the screen.

In addition to YouTube Red, YouTube announced the free YouTube Music app, which is coming soon to mobile devices.

In a blog post, Matt Leske, senior product manager at YouTube, described YouTube Music:

YouTube Music is designed to make discovering, watching and listening to music easier than ever. Any song or artist you choose on YouTube Music will start you on a personal journey through one of the richest music catalogs; just sign in, tap a track you love, and see where your music takes you.

The YouTube Red membership connects to Google Play Music, so users who subscribe to one service will automatically receive access to the other.

Starting in 2016, YouTube Red members will receive exclusive access to new, original shows and movies from major YouTube creators, like PewDiePie and CollegeHumor, among others.

Even with the introduction of YouTube Red, the original free, ad-supported YouTube experience will still be available.
