As Fox prepares to give its hit competition series The Masked Singer a big audience boost with its post-Super Bowl time slot next month, the network is also expanding the franchise, ordering a spinoff series, The Masked Dancer.

Fox and Ellen DeGeneres are producing The Masked Dancer, inspired by a segment on DeGeneres’ The Ellen Show featuring celebrity contestants performing while disguised in elaborate costumes and masks. The network made the announcement at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

After The Masked Singer became a breakout hit last winter, DeGeneres began airing the Masked Dancer segments on her show, in which she and tWitch tried to guess the identity of the mystery dancer, similar to The Masked Singer’s costumed contestants. The segments have featured contestants and guest judges like Howie Mandel, Sean Hayes and Derek Hough, along with The Masked Singer’s Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger and Nick Cannon.

“This is gonna be just as fun and suspenseful as The Masked Singer, but with a lot more Krumping,” said DeGeneres in a statement. “And I cannot wait!”

Many details about the new series are still being worked out, including an airdate and whether executive producer DeGeneres will be involved on-camera.

In other Masked Singer news, Fox said today that Jamie Foxx—who hosts Beat Shazam on the network—will be a guest panelist on The Masked Singer’s Season 3 premiere, which will air after Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, Feb. 2, and is expected to be its most-watched episode ever.

Following its post-Super Bowl debut, Season 3 will air episodes in its usual Wednesday time slot. The network said new costumes this season include The Robot, The Frog, The Banana, The Mouse, Miss Monster and The Llama.

Last fall, Season 2 of The Masked Singer averaged a 3.0 live-plus-7 rating in the 18-49 demo, tied with This Is Us as the season’s No. 1 entertainment program and helping Fox take the demo lead so far in the 2019-2020 TV season. The show is averaging 13.6 million viewers across all platforms.
