Less than a year into her role as president of USA Today Network Marketing Solutions, Sharon Rowlands is creating what she calls “a sense of urgency” for the publisher of USA Today and more than 100 local news brands across the country. Rowlands, who came up through the tech ranks, is also CEO of ReachLocal, which USA Today parent Gannett acquired in 2016.

At Adweek’s third annual Women in Media and Sports event last evening, which was held at USA Today’s New York newsroom and office, Rowlands told us how she was attracting the next generation of news consumer with award-winning journalism.

“You’ve really got to link the conversation with social, to the news events and articulate that. And that’s what really drives an engaged young audience,” she said.
